How to Wear Polka Dots

I've always loved a great polka dot piece. Polka dot dresses remind me of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly in an old black and white movie. Polka dot pants remind me of all the my favorite tunes form Grease. Polka dots are just a classic, yet fun print.

But like color, many are afraid to even come near polka dots. So here are a my top 5 tips on wearing polka dots!

1. Size Matters

If you're already weary about wearing polka dots, don't overdue it by wearing a print that is as big as your face. Instead, start small, literally. Pick a polka dot that isn't the main character of your outfit story. Focus on the silhouette and fit of the garment, and the print will just be an added bonus.

2. Mix it Up

Don't be afraid to add in more prints alongside a polka dot. Florals and stripes pair well together. Mixing prints, is also a great way to create a more flattering look. For example, I am top heavy. Instead of wearing a floral top and polka dot ankle length pants, I can go with a polka dot top and larger floral pants or skirt. This will create a balance between your outfit and your body top to give you a more proportionate figure. But, in the end, you do you boo boo.

3. Keep it in the Family

Sometimes when we try a new print trend, we lose track of the color scheme. I think this happens because we are focused on the pattern and not the overall colors going on in the ensemble. So when putting together an outfit, you might think, "I need a pop of color somewhere," when in reality, the print is your POP! If you're hesitant, stick to a tight color family and/or neutrals. If you'd like to take it one step further, I'd suggest using a bright lip or jewel tone eye shadow as your pop of color.

4. Styling is Everything

When styling polka dots, keep in mind, if you don't want to look aged or frumpy, avoid anything that just doesn't fit. If you're adding ruffles, lace, or pearls to a polka dot look, be aware that the look you will probably achieve is that of Lucille Ball's. Add don't get me wrong, I love Lucy, but it's not always what you want a polka dot look to turn into. Choose modern fit pieces and accessories to keep your style in the 2020's and away from the 1950's (again, unless that's what you're going for).

5. Have Fun

Forget every rule (even the tips I've listed above) and just wear polka dots to your heart's content! It's a print that exudes fun and lightheartedness. Don't focus too much on getting it right, just wear what makes you feel fabulous and you will rock it, I'm guaranteed!

Any suggestions on how to style polka dots? What kind of aesthetic do you go for when wearing the print?

Let me know! I'd love to hear form all of you!
