B of V Reviews: "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert

You may recognize the name Elizabeth Gilbert from the popular book, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia that was made popular by Oprah and then the movie with Julia Roberts. Well, Elizabeth Gilbert is no "one hit wonder."

Although Eat, Pray, Love was not necessarily a self-help book, but a kind of memoir, it helped many travel through rocky times to rediscover themselves. I even tried to read it during that time, but my 15 year-old self just wasn't mature enough to understand it.

Almost 10 years later in 2015, Gilbert published Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, a self-help book.

Now, I didn't read it immediately. I honestly didn't keep Gilbert on my radar, let alone self-help books. At least not until recently.

I've been at a crossroads with my career and having to decide between listening to my creative self or my practical side. I've been constantly asking myself, is it wiser to pursue my creative ventures and feel fulfilled, or to take a job with great benefits so that I can stop worrying about my prescriptions?

Although Big Magic doesn't necessarily answer this dilemma for me, it's a great read to gain a new perspective on creativity.

My best friend actually gifted this book to me after I chatted with her about my career troubles and I am so grateful that she did.

I found myself re-reading paragraphs and full chapters because it was so eye-opening. I can't even count the number of times I actually said "wow" to myself.

One real-life example that I constantly think about is when Gilbert mentions a unique story line she thought up for a fiction novel. She researched and invested time in building the story before writing it. Then, life got in the way. Shockingly, although this story idea had reached the end of its life with Gilbert, it organically found new life in someone else's mind. It's a crazy coincidence that you have to admit when reading, is no coincidence.

Big Magic is truly magical. I love this book and I've gotten myself so excited writing this post, I might pick it up and read it again!

Have you read Big Magic or any other work by Elizabeth Gilbert?

Thanks for reading!
