B of V Reviews: CosmeCon 2019

On the first Saturday of April, the BFF, Esme, and I woke up early and headed to San Jose’s Eastridge Mall for CosmeCon 2019. CosmeCon is a full-day event filled with pop-ups, meet-and-greets, and masterclasses, all focusing on cosmetics!

For the first CosmeCon EVER, the hosts included Chi Creative, Chai Collective, Halo Halo Collective, San Jose Creatives, Latinx Collective, So She Slays, and You Are Collective!

We arrived at Eastridge Mall within 45 minutes of leaving Salinas and were surprised to see that the parking lot was already pretty full for 8:30am.

As we walked in, we saw pop-ups being set up, and people walking towards the center of the mall. At the center, right next to a Starbucks and water fountain with cascading balloons, there was a stage, cocktail tables, a DJ, and a check-in desk surrounded by black rope.

As we got closer, I noticed Ruby, Brianna, and Alice from the Latinx Collective and San Jose Creatives. We knew if they were there, we were 100% in the right place!

Once it was time to start letting people through, it became a little tricky because of the fact that there was champagne being served inside. So after a few minutes and contradictory direction, we were give a wristband (those that were 21 and over were given a second wristband as ID) and allowed into the event area. And once we were in, we were in line once again to grab a flute of champagne, a muffin or croissant, and a goodie bag. The goodie bags were so cute and customized particularly for this event. Esme and I picked up some of the last ones that said “Selena” on one side.

Anyway, we hung out, ate, drank, danced to music from the DJ in the background, and of course, took all the shots for Instagram!

A little while later, once everyone was settled, the panel began. The panel was run by Erika, COO of Shades by Shan, and the panelists being interviewed included So She Slays founders Chauncey and Heather, as well as CEO and face of Shades by Shan, Shan (or Shanberries. Fun Fact: She and Erika are sisters).

It was incredibly inspiring to hear them speak about their struggles in their respective industries, how they learned to rise above those looking for them to fail, and also just the best part about being boss babes.

As a Latina, Shan & Erika’s points of view were eye opening and were a huge boost to my own motivation. Definitely my favorite part of the entire day!

At 11, the pop-up shops opened up around the mall and so the gathering dispersed towards all directions. Esme and I headed to the Sephora inside JCPenney’s pop-up first. Here, we would be able to chose from many beauty brands like Kat Von D, Fenty Beauty, Drunk Elephant, and Ole Henriksen, to receive a mini-makeover. Esme and I both chose Fenty Beauty!

After about a half-hour wait in line, I was seated at Luis’ station. I asked Luis if he could help mattify my face (it was a warm day), maybe add some highlight and a cute lip. He used a translucent face powder to reduce the oil and shine from my face and the Fenty Moscow Mule highlight on my t-zone. Mid-makeover he asked why I didn’t wear eyeshadow. I explained that I am not very good at blending and makeup application in general. He then showed me how I could apply the same highlighter as an eyeshadow or even as a lipstain, by just using my fingers. And finally, he applied the Fenty Fussy gloss. I felt like I was no longer a grease ball, but instead shining bright like a diamond (get it? Cus it’s RiRi’s makeup line and that’s her song and-ok sorry)!

After a photo-opp and another Sephora goodie bag, we headed to the next pop-up at Macy’s. This pop-up was basically just the Macy’s makeup and perfume counters but outside the actual store. Nothing caught our eye so we moved on. Other pop-ups that we skipped on, or simply didn't have the time to stop at included the @ShopGlamifyMe Glitter Bar & Braiding, @LashBinder, @AetherBeautyCo, and @KalepsiaCosmetics stations, and the You Are Collective workshops at Toni&Guy.

There was also a MAC Masterclass for which you needed to purchase a Glam Pass. The pass also guaranteed you a $20 gift card.

After a quick bite at Subway (and some unnecessary shopping at Daiso), Esme and I headed to the Shades by Shan pop-up. It was so fun to see Shan actually there talking to every girl trying on the makeup. And if she saw a girl eyeing the palettes or lip kits, she was super encouraging and even went ahead and helped apply the makeup for you! She was totally selling it, but more than that, it was clear that she is passionate and loves her products.

Esme and I fell in love with her lipkits! I bought the shades Luna and Ingleside. Both great neutrals for the Spring! And, I should mention, after wearing them non-stop since buying them, they’ve become my newest favorite makeup item!

Shortly after leaving the Shades by Shan pop-up, it was time to for the raffle which would be the final part of the event. Prizes included hundreds of dollars’ worth of fragrances, the Dirty 30 Collection by Shades by Shan, among other awesome beauty items. Unfortunately, we didn’t win anything, but we were excited to be heading home to check out our goodie bags and reflect on the day (and also we were going to stop for quesadillas).

Although the event had its kinks, CosmeCon2019 had the beginnings of what I’m sure will become a MUST for any and all beauty bloggers and aficionados in the San Jose area.

In my opinion, they made an excellent choice with the panel picks and featuring So She Slays and Shades by Shan. Although I didn't have a chance to check out all of the pop-ups, I think the ones located at the larger stores, like Sephora inside JCPenney's and Macy's, could improve for next year's festivities.

Did you have the opportunity to check out the first ever CosmeCon? What did you think? What was favorite pop-up?

As always, thanks for reading guys!
